Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S4 smartphone could be one of two new models to launch in the coming, with rumours pointing to a Galaxy S4 Mini that could appear alongside it.

According to Samsung watcher SamMobile, the Korean company is planning to launch a pair of Android devices into the market aimed at two different segments: the Galaxy S4 will sit at the top as a premium smartphone for those with larger budgets, while the Galaxy S4 Mini will be for those who prefer something a little more compact and, more importantly, cheaper.

The site's claims, as-yet unverified by Samsung, point to full compatibility between the two on all fronts except wireless charging: while the Galaxy S4 will apparently include similar wireless charging technology to Google's LG-manufactured Nexus 4 smartphone, the Galaxy S4 Mini will lose the feature in order to reduce size and component cost.

Launching a cut-price Mini version of its smartphones isn't new for Samsung: the current-generation Galaxy S3 has its own Galaxy S3 Mini equivalent. However, they typically come at a significant reduction in specification. The Galaxy S3 Mini, for example, drops the Galaxy S3's quad-core 1.5GHz processor to a more sedate dual-core 1GHz model and the 4.8in 720x1,280 display to a smaller 4in 480x800 panel. Even the rear-facing camera suffers from a drop in quality, going from eight megapixels to five and losing the ability to record in 1080p Full HD.

It's unlikely that this tactic of reducing the performance of the phone at the same time as reducing the cost will change for the Galaxy S4 Mini, but it offers Samsung two bites at the apple: those looking for the most powerful phone on the market will likely consider the Galaxy S3 as their handset of choice, but those on a tighter budget - especially those who have been eyeing up the Nexus 4 - may opt for the Galaxy S3 Mini instead.

SamMobile also points to the possibility of a third device launch, codenamed Project J Active. While no details are yet available, listed accessories include an arm band, bicycle mount and pouch - suggesting either a wearable smartphone or at least a ruggedised model designed for outdoor use.
