![Motorola X Phone already impressing industry executives](/erphoto18463350.jpg)
Hype surrounding the rumoured Motorola X Android smartphone, the first to be developed under the brand since Motorola Mobility was acquired by Google, is reaching fever-pitch with an executive at one mobile network hinting that the gadget will be a "game-changer" for the industry.
Google has already won considerable success with its Nexus 4 smartphone, a device manufactured by LG and designed to showcase the latest version of Google's Android operating system. Despite a few hiccoughs along the way, including hardware and software glitches and a lack of stock, the device has proved solidly popular thanks to a high specification at a surprisingly low cost.
The Nexus 4 is expected to get some competition from Google's own Motorola subsidiary, however: leaked specifications suggest that the Motorola X Phone will ship with Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, a next-generation version of the mobile operating system with entirely new features, along with weatherproofing, a smash-proof Kevlar casing, and a high-capacity battery for multi-day run times.
According to an anonymous Motorola source speaking to Australian technology site Smarthouse, the X Phone will include unique tweaks not available on any other device. "It has software features and capabilities that are not available on a Samsung Galaxy smartphone or Apple iPhone", the source claimed. "The software is really powerful and it pulls together Google services like no other manufacturer has done in the past."
The site also quotes Hugh Bradlow, chief technology officer for Australian mobile network Telstra, as stating that the Motorola X Phone is "a real breakthrough, a game-changer that will put pressure on Samsung and Apple."
Should the device rely on the allure of Android 5.0, however, its glory may be short-lived: the next-generation software will likely remain exclusive to the Motorola X Phone for only a brief period of time, before being made available to Google's own-brand Nexus handsets.
While Google has not commented on the rumours, it is expected to unveil the Motorola X Phone at its developer conference in May ahead of a July retail launch. Pricing has not yet been confirmed, but is likely to be significantly higher than the Nexus 4.
